Alberta Free-mo 2004

Our first show with another group. As you can see in the photo, it was a rather modest setup, with half the layout comprising our then-unnamed yard and approximately 9 modules of our own. On the other side of the yard were a few modules and a half-completed yard belonging to the Battle River Railway Modellers from Camrose.

Little advertising was done for this show, and some of the local residents of Big Valley came down to see what was going on. Some of the longtime residents were impressed by the homage paid to the community by the pair of VIA Rail Budd RDC's which traversed the layout, in a similar fashion that happened in Big Valley in the 70's and 80's before the town's rail line to the south was abandoned by CN. We also started a tradition of who could run the longest train, and the photo below shows a very long train which completely fills the outside of Larsen Loop and 8th Street East with a single train. In the following years, we have seen longer and longer trains, including a 108 car unit coal train.

The show was considered a success, and declared that so long as we can get the space on that weekend every year, we would make it an annual event and attempt to introduce more and more people to the Free-mo concept.
