Traintable - Owned and built by Calgary Free-mo
Type of module: Single-Ended
A utilitarian module of a different type was constructed for the Calgary Free-Mo group by Greg Cave and members of the Calgary Free Mo group. A four foot turntable module was built to enable steam engines, passenger coaches and diesel locomotive consists to turn at the end of the yard modules. This was deemed necessary to minimize the wear and tear on fragile coaches and locomotives; while facilitating a change of direction.
The module is a 24” wide single track free-mo module with a four foot turntable rotating on an inexpensive cabinet “Lazy Susan” base. The rotating unit is an “Armstrong” style turntable. The track power is provided through 2 matching sets of blade switches, which also act as an index and locking mechanism. A drive mechanism was contemplated, but deemed unnecessary. A removable “barber pole coloured” dowel may be installed at each the end of the turntable to prevent “nose plants” off the end of the rotating unit. One such incident has occurred to date with some other close calls.
This module is currently Scenicked.
